Meet Beatrice!

Hi!

Meet Beatrice 1I hope you’re all having a lovely start to your week! Although I’m feeling a bit under the weather, (colds are no fun!) I couldn’t wait to share the newest addition to our doll family. Over the weekend, I received the EAH Forest Pixie Harelow doll as a gift, and fell in love with her adorable bunny ears and spring-y dress. I ended up renaming her Beatrice (after Peter Rabbit author Beatrix Potter) and decided that she’s a fan of animals, illustration, riding her bike, and gardening. Yesterday afternoon, the two of us headed outside for a sunlight-filled photo shoot…

Bri’s New Year’s Live Blog + Meet Eliza and Sarah

Happy Almost January, everyone! Bella and I wanted to spend the last couple days of 2015 getting a head start on our New Year’s Resolutions – being a bit better about updating the blog. We’ve been really busy these past couple of months with school and the holidays, but not to worry! We have lots of great things coming up, including our next issue, featuring the new GOTY. (Bella and I are going to our nearest AG store on Friday for the new release, and we’ll be sure to share our thoughts on the new items.) Today I’m popping in to share some fun Bri-related news, as well as introduce you to two new additions who joined our doll family last week.

Bri Live Blog 2015First up, Bri will be back this year with another New Year’s Eve Live Blog! For those of you who missed last year’s event, you can check it out here (along with the summer version), but we can also quickly sum it up: Bri and her buds celebrated the New Year with a party (and took over the comments section), which was documented and updated every half hour here on the blog until midnight. The response was great and we had loads of fun, so Bella and I are quite excited for this year’s installment. Check out the details below!

  • On December 31 (Tomorrow!) Bri will be having a New Year’s Eve extravaganza with her friends, and will be blogging an extra special post in honor of the event here on the Doll Mag blog. The post will be updated throughout the evening at every half hour. So, every 30 minutes, be sure to refresh your page to see what Bri is up to.
  • The event starts tomorrow evening at 8:30 PM E.T. and will run until 12:00 AM.
  • Starting 8:30 PM E.T. till 12:00 AM E.T., Bri will be online and responding to your comments! Sounds fun, right?

We hope you can join in on the festivities! And of course, you can always catch up on Jan 1st.

Now, onto the new additions to our doll family! I was lucky enough to receive two new Ever After High dolls this holiday season, Dragon Games Darling Charming and Fairest on Ice Duchess Swan. Both are gorgeous and very photogenic, so I couldn’t wait to do their introductory photo shoots. Below are their pictures and a bit more in-depth info about them.

Eliza 1I’ll start with Duchess, who is a vision in purple. When I first saw the photos of the Fairest on Ice line, Duchess was definitely my favorite, but seeing her in person is what really made me fall in love with her. She has the loveliest eyes and makeup (those eyebrows!) and her outfit is gorgeous. I ended up renaming her Eliza, because not only does it suit her, but also because Bella and I are huge Hamilton fans, and Eliza Hamilton (played by the amazing Phillipa Soo) is the best. Anyway, I figure that Eliza probably enjoys ice skating, Broadway musicals, a good brunch, and dance.

Eliza 2 Eliza 3 Eliza 4

Sarah 1Next up we have Dragon Games Darling Charming, who I’ve been eyeing for a little while. I really liked Darling’s character in the EAH webseries, so I was eager to check out her dolls. Her Dragon Games version immediately piqued my interest with her detailed armor and light blue color palette, so I was quite excited to receive her as a gift. And like Eliza, she is amazing in person! She has a really nice facial screening, and her outfit is super duper cool. I ended up naming her Sarah, (after Sarah Walker, from my favorite TV show, Chuck) and decided that she probably likes fantasy movies and books (Wizards! Pirates! Magic!), mythology and mythos, animals, and chocolate chip cookies.

And one last photo of these cuties together…

Working on Wednesdays / 36

Hello!

Thanksgiving Illustration Chuck Groenink{via}

Happy Wednesday, friends! Lulu and I apologize for taking a brief hiatus without warning; the two of us didn’t plan to go two weeks without posting. Now that we’ve both had the chance to catch our breaths and devote our attention to DM matters, we wanted to share a few Doll Mag updates in a new “Working on Wednesdays” – a little housekeeping, if you will. Then let’s chat: what have we missed on your sites? In doll scoop? With our favorite readers?

First, we are planning to publish our holiday issue on Wednesday, November 25. Think of it as a special treat to read alongside your turkey day leftovers! :) We have been working hard on wrapping up each article, and we’ll be finishing our final design elements this weekend. Thank you for your patience; we think the wait will have been worth it {Hamilton reference for the win}.

Second, we recognize the lack of posts on the DM blog! Lulu and I like to live by the motto of “quality over quantity,” so when life gets busy, we would rather keep the site quiet than hastily put a post together. Hopefully, you understand our slow blogging approach, but with the holidays coming, our hope is that it won’t last forever.

And that brings us to our third and final point: mark your calendars for December 1, the return of Holiday Headquarters! This will be our third year running our series of festive posts, and the two of us couldn’t be more excited for it to begin. Let the gingerbread-making and present-wrapping commence!

Have a terrific night!

Meet Molly!

Hi!

When I first became interested in the Ever After High line a few years ago, I immediately fell in love with the turquoise-haired, tea-loving Madeline Hatter. In fact, I was so in love that I planned on getting her as my first EAH doll, but my local store didn’t have her in stock; so you can then imagine how excited I was when I received her Sugar Coated doll as a birthday gift a couple of weeks ago! After excitedly ripping the paper off her box, I was happy to see that she is just as cute in person as she is in the pictures. And so, without further ado, here’s Molly! {also known as Maddie}

Molly 6I usually rename my Ever After High dolls, and this time was no different! After a little bit of brainstorming, my mom, Bella, and I finally decided on calling this Wonderland cutie Molly. I’ve also decided that she loves tea, roller skating, sci-fi and time travel books, and baking shows. She and Gigi can have endless Masterchef marathons!

Over the weekend, Molly and I grabbed some tea-themed fabric and snapped a few introductory photos…

Staff Picks / September 2015

Hello, hello!

Happy weekend, friends! We love to take the time on Saturday and Sunday to get ahead on schoolwork, have spontaneous movie nights {our latest was Newsies, after we saw the musical of the same name over the summer}, and best of all, catch up on our favorite blogs, doll-related and otherwise. We had skipped Staff Picks in August due to our short vacation, but the feature has returned with a batch of excellent posts, articles, and other mentions. Read to your heart’s content before sharing your favorite posts of the month – blog love is the best.

Staff Picks September 2015{1} Some of Lulu’s favorite movies when she was younger were the ones starring the Disney Fairies; this adorable post by Journey Girl’s Adventures, therefore, was only bound to make her smile! The gorgeous shots, the captivating photo effects, and the well-placed cliffhanger all guarantee that she’ll be back for next week’s installment. Thumbs up from us!

{2} There are some bloggers that make being cool look effortless. Case in point? Inky, New York resident and Instagram superstar, who recently gave us a peek into her perfectly-styled bedroom. From her extensive Uglydoll collection to her colorful rows of books, it’s clear Inky has an eye for interior design, so only one question remains: when can we visit?

{3} While the latest Ever After High special did come out in August, Lulu couldn’t help but include it in this month’s round of picks! The animation was breathtaking {especially in the outfit transformation sequence!} and she adored the “wonderlandiful” story. She would love to discuss with other EAH fans, so if you’ve seen it, be sure to share your thoughts in the comments :)

{4} It’s hard to keep up with trends in real life, let alone translate them to the doll world too! For this reason, Bella adores any fashion craft that is both easy and quick to make, like Liz’s recent leather bracelet inspired tutorial. It’s trendy, it’s creative, and it’s an oh-so cute accessory to go with our dolls’ fall wardrobes. Perhaps we’ll make a few of our own as we watch the Brooklyn Nine-Nine premiere tonight!

{5} Doll Mag advice of the day: There’s nothing a good piece of cake can’t solve! Lulu loved reading about Kaya and Xyra’s adventures in the kitchen in a recent photo story; that lemon cake looks oh-so yummy {and makes us both hungry and ready to bake!}. What recipes have you been whipping up as of late?

{6} Finally, the girls at Dolly Dorm Diaries have impressed us yet again with their gorgeous photography and fun adventures. Cindy, Christina, and Saige took advantage of the late summer weather to fit in another beach trip, but this time with other friends: their horses! We think there’s nothing better than doing something with the people you love most, and it seems they agree.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Psst. Thanks to everyone who entered this month’s survey so far! Though our issues only has the room for one reader to be featured, we love reading your responses. Keep ‘em coming by entering HERE!

Monthly Recap / July 2015

Hello!

Monthly RecapAs the saying goes, “time flies when you’re having fun.” The statement couldn’t be truer as the two of us look back over our July. With weeks of seeing friends, attending work and camp, and soaking up the summer sun, the start of August took us by surprise! Nevertheless, the start of a new month brings another monthly recap; we take this chance to share the highlights of our month, while you can catch up on the best – and most recent – posts on the Doll Mag blog. How was your July?

What We Loved ♥ Bella kicked off her July with three weeks of working as a counselor at a local summer program; she helped incoming middle schoolers adjust to the new building, and, later, befriended first graders as they erupted homemade volcanoes in a science camp. The fun continued when she was asked to work crew at a community production of Stephen King’s Carrie. Although it wouldn’t be her first production of choice {too much fake blood and telekinesis for her liking}, she had a blast and made several new friends backstage. Bella finished up her eventful July by celebrating her birthday with family and starting a typography course at a nearby design college.

Lulu is also enjoying her summer vacation! Her mornings were well-spent watching all three seasons of Dance Academy for the third time {we can never get enough of Abigail and Sammy}, and the relaxation continued into the afternoon with new books to read – The Last Ever After, anyone? – and ice cream to make. Lulu also throughly enjoyed Newsies when the two of us saw it in early July, as well as the new films Minions and Mr. Holmes. Finally, Lulu has also started an art class at the same school; her course, however, is on miniature set design.

Looking Ahead ♥ In our last monthly recap, we were counting down the days until summer break, but now, we are already prepping for the new school year! Both of us will be wrapping up our summer reading, going back-to-school shopping {Bella’s favorite}, and finding out our schedules in the coming weeks. Before we head back to the classroom, however, the two of us will be taking a family trip to Virginia – we can’t wait! In the meantime, we hope you’ll follow us on Instagram at @dollmagblog. We have posted nothing yet, but our first picture is on its way :)

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Staff Picks / July 2015

Hello!

With July coming to a close, it’s time for another round of Staff Picks! The two of us have been writing this monthly feature since the beginning of the Doll Mag blog {i.e quite a long time}, and we still believe it’s important to highlight the work of other talented doll fans. Fortunately, summer seems to be treating us doll bloggers well – we had such a difficult choosing from July’s slew of creative posts! Since June escaped without its own staff picks, we packed today’s round-up with eight terrific finds to brighten up your Thursday. Read and spread some love.

July Staff Picks1 / Syddie, blogger of Snister’s Flock, is an outstanding photographer; we are often left in awe when we read her new posts! Thankfully for us and other admirers of her photos, she’s willing to share some of her secrets, as she does in her recent photo shoot. Her photos – with stunning bokeh – capture Caroline, Jimmy the Fox, and their doll sized world perfectly.

2 / We don’t follow A Girl for All Time as closely as, say, American Girl or Ever After High, but we were excited nonetheless to see the promotional photo of their newest doll: Sam, the line’s 1960’s girl! From her adorable rosy cheeks to her stylish mod dress, we’re sure she’ll be a sell-out come September. Thanks to Confessions of a Doll Collector’s Daughter for sharing the news!

3 / Charlie always seems to have a fun day planned and photographed. Case in point? Her recent post on her trip to the zoo! With the cutest tote bag and camera in hand, Charlie snapped pictures of lions, elephants, and other animals to share with her readers. All we want to know now is if we can join her on her next field trip!

4 / The two of us agree: if we were given a chance to travel anywhere in the world, Europe would be at the top of our lists! Sabine’s recent travel recap already had our attention with its title; we Audrey Hepburn fans know our Roman Holiday :) She follows up a great name with photos of famous sites and insight into her trip to Rome. Yes and yes.

5 / July was quite a busy month in the Ever After High World! Pictures of upcoming releases were posted online, the dolls themselves were shown at the San Diego Comic Con, and hints about the next hour-long special were released. Lulu was particularly excited about the new signature release dolls, and she eagerly stalked checked her favorite EAH blogs for photos from the Con. Her favorites? Justine Dancer {pictured here} and Heartstruck C.A. Cupid.

6 / Summer calls for light sundresses and evenings spent outside, two things that Charlotte and Becca from Simply Dollightful recently took advantage of. The gorgeous sun-drenched pictures of their photo story had us pulling out our own mini dolls and attempting to make as pretty of a French braid. Bonus points for the Anne of Green Gables reference!

7 / Clarisse rocks her sense of style with each new post she publishes, so of course it was no different of a case with her birthday recap. In typical Clarisse fashion, her party was complete with live music, chocolate cupcakes, and thoughtful gifts {we want that Kate Spade bag ourselves!}. Bella, as a July birthday buddy, definitely approves.

8 / We have mentioned our love of frozen treats before, so it came as no surprise that this tasty looking sorbet from A Peek Into the Pantry caught our eye. Gwen’s recipe for an Addy inspired Ice Orangeade is not only easy to follow, but also explained with a number of interesting historical facts. Time to get out the ice cream maker!

Happy Thursday!

Ever After High (Part 2) / Style

Hi!

It’s been a while since our last style post, hasn’t it? While I was doing a bit of Etsy Pinning earlier this weekend, I noticed that there were lots of cute Ever After High and Monster High clothing options available (many more than there was when I wrote up the original EAH and MH style post). I was very excited to find so many cute clothes for my smaller dolls, and I thought that you would be too! And so, here are some of my favorite Ever After High Etsy listings at the moment…

Oh Sew Happy / 01

Hi! Oh Sew HappyI hope you’re all having an awesome weekend! Today I’m happy to introduce a new feature, called “Oh Sew Happy!” where I’ll be sharing sewing tutorials that anyone can make. For this post I’ll be showing you how to create a paper bag skirt for Ever After High and American Girl dolls. Not only is this skirt adorable, but you can also make it in under a half hour. Let’s get to it, shall we?

YOU WILL NEED…

  • Regular scissors
  • Fabric scissors
  • A ruler
  • Pins
  • Velcro
  • Fabric
  • A sewing machine and matching thread OR a needle and matching embroidery thread

Oh Sew Happy Tutorial

TO MAKE

  1. Cut out your fabric. For an Ever After High or Monster High skirt you’ll need a 3 by 9 inch piece, and for an American Girl skirt you’ll need a 7 by 20 inch piece.
  2. Hem the two short sides and one of the long sides. (I recommend folding your fabric over twice so there are no exposed edges.) You’ll definitely want to use pins for the American Girl doll fabric, but you don’t necessarily need them for the EAH one.
  3. The directions for this step are slightly longer for the sewing machine than the needle. Sewing Machine Directions: Change the stitch so it’s looser (I set my machine to 4) and hem the other long side. ONLY LOCK ONE SIDE and keep the threads long. Needle Directions: Hem the other long side, but don’t cut the thread.
  4. Pull one edge of your thread so the top hem gathers. (If sewing on a sewing machine, only pull the bobbin thread and do so very gently.) Hold the fabric up against your doll as you do this, making sure it fits her waist. Lock the gathering by stitching over the ends of the original hemming thread. Add velcro and you’re done!

Sienna and Sally Sally and Sienna love their new skirts! Be sure to send us pictures of your sewing creations at dollmagblog(at)gmail(dot)com!

Have a great night,

Lulu

Meet Gigi!

Hi!

Meet GigiA few weeks ago, my wonderful mother surprised me with a very special gift…a Ginger Breadhouse Ever After High doll! I immediately fell in love with her cute glasses and fluffy pink hair, and began brainstorming nicknames. After a couple hours of scouring name sites and collaborating with Bella, I came up with the perfect name: Gigi! Or Gigi the Genius, as Bri has deemed her. She loves science, baking (she and Cupid are going to be whipping up all sorts of yummy treats!), old movies, chocolate, fashion, and wants to be a Food Scientist when she grows up!

Gigi the Genius and I couldn’t wait to take some sweet-themed photos…

Happy Thursday!
