Seeing Green / Style

Happy St. Patricks day! The spring weather made a stop up in New England today, and Bella and I took advantage of the warmer temperatures by spending the afternoon outside. In honor of today’s festivities, we’ve put together a collection of our favorite green Etsy listings for your 18-inch doll. Enjoy!

Snug as a Bug / Style

Warm, cozy, and comfortable are staple qualities in an autumnal wardrobe, but that shouldn’t discount the importance of style too! With sweater weather upon us, Lulu and I wanted to focus a new style post {yes, also, hi, we’ve been awful at updating lately} on our favorite sweaters of the season. From cute pullover sweatshirts to trendy knitted cardigans, there’s surely a sweater below for every member of your doll family. What Etsy items have caught your eye this month?

Shorts for Summer / Style

Lulu is our go-to style expert, but we here at Doll Mag are nothing if not a flexible bunch, so I’m giving my first go at a style post. Our last fashion round-up was back in March {I know, time flies!}, so we wanted to share the shorts we have been eyeing on Etsy before summer vacation hit. With the temperatures rising by the day, we have been stocking up on shorts for our dolls’ – and our own – wardrobes. What’s on your Etsy wishlist as of late?

Seven Days of Style / May 2015

With the warmer temperatures and the gorgeous sun that appear day after day, we’re sure we are not the only ones pulling out our summer wardrobes! The switch in seasons calls for another round of Seven Days of Style, a feature where we challenge ourselves to create seven outfits from ten pieces of clothing. Our model, Zoey, was eager to show off the stylish ensembles below, but if you need even more fashion inspiration, you can browse the archives HERE :)

Seven Days of Style May 2015Here are the ten items we used in this month’s edition. Per usual, clicking on the link will bring you to the AG site {if it is still available for sale} or the American Girl Wiki {if the piece is retired}.

SundaySunday: Layered Blouse, Pastel Capris, Vintage Oxfords

Zoey knows the fun in switching up her style; for this quiet Sunday, she channeled a vintage vibe by pairing her layered blouse with lightweight capris and comfortable oxfords. The cool color palette coordinates the pieces of the outfit, ensuring her day at home is a day well spent.

MondayMonday: Floral Tee, Denim Jeans, Pink Sneakers

There’s no need to stress about the week ahead with an adorable outfit already picked out. Your doll will be ready to run from an after school activity to her best friend’s house with relaxed, but no less cute, pieces, like a printed tee and colorful Converse sneakers. A high pony matches the playful vibe of the outfit!

TuesdayTuesday: Peplum Top, Cropped Cardigan, Denim Jeans, Vintage Oxfords

Is your doll rocking a trendy top? Keep the rest of her outfit classic, not clashing, by adding closet staples; the cardigan, boyfriend jeans, and oxfords here pair nicely with Zoey’s embroidered peplum top. The slight floral detail brings a sense of spring {even if she is stuck in a classroom all day}!

WednesdayWednesday: Striped Shirt, Sundress, Vintage Oxfords

If the Wednesday blues hit, a dressier ensemble is sure to perk up your doll’s morning. If the weather calls for another layer, use our favorite “wardrobe hack” and turn her striped shirt into a cute cardigan. Add a neutral pair of shoes, put her hair up into a messy bun, and she’s ready for the world – or the last week of school :)

ThursdayThursday: Floral Tee, Pastel Capris, Pink Sneakers

Pastel capris can look frumpy if not styled correctly, but Zoey experiences no trouble with this cute outfit. Tucking in her tee instantly lengthens your doll’s leg, and comfy pink trainers tie the colors of the outfit together. She looks ready for an afternoon playing outside!

FridayFriday: Striped Shirt, Denim Jeans, Vintage Oxfords

Finish the school week on a stylish note by pairing three classic items. Denim jeans are a girl’s best friend; they can be rolled up into cropped pants or act as casual trousers, as in this nautical-inspired ensemble. One can never go wrong with a striped shirt, especially when it’s contrasted with a bright red hair bow! Last touch? Her beloved oxfords.

SaturdaySaturday: Floral Tee, Sundress, Vintage Oxfords

Finally, it may be the weekend, but that shouldn’t stop your doll from pulling out her skirts and dresses. Whether she is shopping with her family or hanging with friends, an adorable t-shirt and a dress disguised as a skirt are the perfect pieces for her weekend.

Have a lovely night!

Seven Days of Style / February 2015

We have so much fun shooting and writing the Seven Days of Style, and we are doing our best to post them on a monthly basis – or at least every holiday :) With Valentine’s Day coming up in a few short weeks, this month’s collection of outfits is made up of plenty of red and pink pieces. Our freckled cutie, Ellie, models the seven ensembles below! If you want more outfit inspiration, you can see the last Seven Days of Style HERE.

The two of us apologize for the lack of an item photo, but as always, here are the links to each piece used; clicking on them will bring you to the AG website or the AG Wiki page for reference.

February 2015 Seven Days of StyleSunday: Lacy Top, Sparkly Shorts, Pink Flats

An outing with friends is the perfect time to dress up! While these three trendy pieces match, the coordination isn’t over-the-top thanks to the subtle details on top and bottom. With this chic pairing, a voluminous ponytail is all she needs before heading out the door.

February 2015 Seven Days of StyleMonday: Coconut Tee, Reversible Skirt, Pink Flats

A flouncy skirt and an adorable tee instantly rid of Monday morning blues! Pink is the color that ties everything together here, but the less girly need not worry: any color can be used to coordinate a tee and skirt combo. Finally, twisting the hair back before securing into pigtails frames her face – it works with braids too!

February 2015 Seven Days of StyleTuesday: Love Sweater, Heart Patch Jeans, Pink Flats

Math test, a student council meeting, and band practice have nothing on this sharp ensemble! A cherry-red sweater and comfy boyfriend jeans are comfortable choices, no matter how busy her schedule. A quick pin in her hair is a necessary skill to learn for busy mornings.

February 2015 Seven Days of StyleWednesday: Geometric Sweater, Lacy Top, Heart Patch Jeans, Pink Flats

The school week is halfway-done, so celebrate with a stylish – and comfy – outfit! Though the lacy white top is sophisticated, a messy braided crown, a big sweater, and boyfriend jeans keep her outfit casual. New to the braided crown trend? Simply braid your doll’s hair on both sides and pin in the back. Cute and easy!

February 2015 Seven Days of StyleThursday: Lacy Top, Reversible Skirt, Pink Flats

A reversible skirt is an invaluable piece in your doll’s wardrobe. A quick flip provides a new choice in styling; here, the light pink skirt pairs perfectly with the lace shirt and ballet flats. This darling ensemble only needs a mini fishtail braid, with a few choice fly-aways, to finish the look.

February 2015 Seven Days of StyleFriday: Coconut Tee, Sparkly Shorts, Blue High Top Sneakers

It can be daunting to wear a new trend, like sparkly shorts, to school, but there’s no day like Friday to try one out! Fortunately, a fun graphic tee and colorful high tops help to ease any worries, and a simple hairstyle {we have Ellie in a half-up style here} lets the chic pair of shorts shine.

February 2015 Seven Days of StyleSaturday: Light Pink Dress, Pink Flats

Finally, Valentine’s Day calls for a stylish dress, like this fashionable pink number! The only accessories needed are a pair of pink flats; the chic cut, ruffled layers, and bow belt ensure she’ll look cute no matter how she celebrates.

Have a terrific Tuesday!

Seven Days of Style / Holiday Headquarters Edition!

Back by popular demand, it’s the Seven Days of Style: Holiday Headquarters edition! With the number of events that come with the holidays, December presents many opportunities for your doll to play around with her wardrobe. With that in mind, we’ve created seven outfits out of just ten pieces for any event that many come your doll’s way in the next few weeks. Are your dolls dressed for the holidays yet? {We spent Thanksgiving weekend dressing ours :)}

Seven Days of Style Holiday ItemsHere are the items you’ll need for this winter round {links will bring you to the AG store or AG wiki for reference}. As always, your doll doesn’t need the items shown to get the same effect. Dig through your own collection to find similar items, and have fun playing with different combinations!

Seven Days of Style: Holiday PartyHoliday Party: Knit Sweater, Flouncy Skirt, Festive Flats

Your doll’s holiday ensemble need not be a source of worry with party-ready pieces on hand. With a stunning hairstyle {think big curls, as Nicki has here, or an intricate bun}, a cozy winter sweater and multicolored skirt are perfect for an event with family and friends. Comfortable shoes, such as ballet flats, are a must if she plans to mingle all night long!

ays of Style: Window ShoppingWindow Shopping: Winter Sweater, Tutu Skirt, Cozy Boots

If your doll wants to go shopping downtown with friends, she’ll need to look cute and stay warm. Tutu skirts are a trendy piece that update any outfit, and tights can be added for the coldest of days. Pair it with her favorite winter sweater and beloved boots, and she will be ready to shop the day away.

ays of Style: Nutcracker BalletNutcracker Ballet: Long Sleeve Tee, Tutu Skirt, Festive Flats

The local production of The Nutcracker calls for something fancy. Think of unexpected pairings without losing the classy touch; Nicki pairs a casual tee with a fluffy skirt, but keeps it simple with her choice in shoes and hair. Have a color consistent throughout the outfit – it ensures your doll looks sophisticated, instead of sloppy!

ays of Style: Caroling NightCaroling Night: Puffy Coat, Leggings, Cozy Boots

She’ll make any homeowner smile when your doll is bundled up in style. Winter essentials, such as thick leggings and a long coat, remain stylish with chic cuts and unique touches {we love the fur cuffs and collar on Nicki’s jacket}. Pull her hair back in an easy ponytail before sending her out to sing.

ays of Style: Day on the SlopesSnow Day: Knit Sweater, Leggings, Cozy Boots

If your doll wakes up to no school, plan for a fun day in the snow. With the addition of cozy boots, a knit sweater and long leggings bring “ski style” back home. All she needs now?! A cup of hot cocoa to stay warm!

ays of Style: Wrapping PresentsGift-Wrapping Afternoon: Long Sleeve Tee, Rockin’ Dress, Festive Flats

With the help of furry friends and a cute outfit, that pile of presents will be wrapped in no time! Just as she can be creative with her gift-wrapping methods, be inventive with the pieces in your doll’s closet. Here, a dress is disguised as a skirt underneath a long-sleeve tee with the same color palette.

ays of Style: New Year's Eve PartyNew Year’s Eve Celebration: Rockin’ Dress, Puffy Coat, Festive Flats

After the hustle and bustle of the holidays, we’re sure your doll is ready to count down to 2015 on New Year’s Eve. From arriving in her fashionable coat to dancing in her sequined dress, she’ll be the most stylish one of the night. Don’t forget her noisemaker!

Have a terrific rest of your day!

Seven Days of Style / Halloween Edition!

We were delighted to find that you enjoyed our last round of Seven Days of Style, so much so that you convinced us to do another edition! Mixing and matching with a limited number of pieces pushes your creativity; a cardigan becomes a sweater, a headband becomes a scarf, a dress becomes a skirt – your possibilities are endless. With Halloween coming up this Friday, our seven outfits are centered around the fall season. Have you been inspired to play around with your doll’s wardrobe?

Seven Days of Style Halloween EditionFor this spooky edition, you will need the items labeled above. Here’s what we used, in case you have similar tastes {the links will take you to the store or AG Wiki for reference} :) As always, don’t feel the need to have exactly what we have. Play around with the outfits you own!

SundaySunday: Halloween Tee, Leggings

For a comfy day at home, there’s no better outfit than an adorable tee-shirt and patterned leggings. Although both pieces are primarily black, the ghosts image and white polka dots are enough to break up the ensemble. A colorful ribbon is an added touch to her ponytail!

MondayMonday: Solid Tee, Skirt, Flats

Start your doll’s week off right with a flouncy skirt and dainty ballet flats! Staying solid on top lets the trendy bottom pieces shine, but a common color – in this case, blue – unifies the outfit. Finally, mini braids are easy to master and even quicker to do.

TuesdayTuesday: Cardigan, Leggings, Boots

Wake up with a chill? A cozy sweater is the cure. By turning around your doll’s chic cardigan, she can add a turtleneck to her clothing rotation {just be sure to fold down the collar}. It’s the perfect look when paired with leggings and stylish boots!

WednesdayWednesday: Dress, Solid Tee, Flats

Wednesday never fails to be busy, but your doll will be on top of things with her put-together look. The solid tee works double-duty as a lightweight cardigan, and the dress makes a tee-and-skirt combo that much easier. Throw on some flats, and she’ll be good to go!

ThursdayThursday: Headband, Solid Tee, Boyfriend Jeans, Flats

Let your doll show her Halloween spirit with a festive scarf {it’s a headband in disguise}! Wear it with her beloved boyfriend jeans, a solid-color shirt, and patterned flats – it’s an easy-peasy combination.

FridayFriday: Headband, Halloween Tee, Dress, Boots

She’ll need an adorable outfit for the class Halloween party before she heads out trick-or-treating! Keeping in the same color palette makes mixing and matching simple; here, we paired the black and white dress with the black and white tee. Meanwhile, the headband and boots add texture and color.

SaturdaySaturday: Cardigan, Solid Tee, Boyfriend Jeans, Flats

She may not have to go to school, but that is no excuse not to look stylish! Your doll need not worry, as this outfit is made up of the basics: a great cardigan, a long-sleeved shirt, worn-in jeans, and ballet flats. Simple always looks cute.

What’s your favorite outfit?

Have a terrific night!

Doll Mag Academy / Seven Days Of Style

Seven Days Of StyleLast year (during our Back to School Week), Bella and I published a post called Seven Days Of Style, featuring my adorable doll Cece; included were tips on how to make outfits for every day of the week using only ten pieces. Our readers enjoyed it so much that we couldn’t wait to bring it back and share it with you again – and here it is! We picked out ten new pieces, made seven new outfits, and Cece and I are here to give style tips and tricks. Let’s get started!

Clothing Items Alright! To get started, you’ll need to gather up your pieces. You don’t need the same exact ones as us, as similar items will create the same effect or look. Here are the outfits our items belong to, in case you’re curious…

  • Headband from Janie Jumps on Etsy
  • Patterned Skirt from The Mix and Match Outfit Collection
  • Jeggings and Lace Top from Saige’s Sweater Outfit
  • Tunic from the Licorice Play Outfit
  • Vest and Sandals from the Weekend Fun Outfit
  • Basic Tee from the Jumper and Boots Outfit
  • Sweatshirt from the Kickin’ Back Outfit
  • Boots from the Pretty and Plaid Outfit

SundaySunday / Jeggings, Boots, Tunic, Basic Tee

Your doll can end her weekend right in a cute tunic and some comfy boots. Keep her hair maintained in a playful bubble braid and throw on a sweater (or in this case, a backwards top), and she’s good to go!

MondayMonday / Jeggings, Sandals, Lace Top, Vest, Headband

Mondays aren’t always fun, but your doll will be ready to take on the week in this simple, chic ensemble. Add a few pops of color with shoes or other accessories, but try to keep the other pieces subtly stylish.

TuesdayTuesday / Patterned Skirt, Sandals, Vest, Basic Tee

Your doll will be twirling through the school hallways in a fun skirt and shoes! Leave her hair in a basic ‘do and keep the outfit classic with a few extra twists. Throw a scarf here or a vest there, and her personal flair will show.

WednesdayWednesday / Sandals, Jeggings, Basic Tee, Lace Top, Headband

Layer up for the chillier days! Throw your doll’s fave tank or tee over a long sleeve top for an extra boost in pattern and texture. Add some jeggings, a headband, and a bit of color, and you’ll have aced this look.

ThursdayThursday / Sandals, Jeggings, Tunic, Basic Tee

The weekend’s almost here! Go out with a bang and wear a cute tunic or dress to ensure the second half of the school week is just as stylish as the first. Don’t forget to bring out details and colors with hair clips and accessories.

FridayFriday / Boots, Patterned Skirt, Sweatshirt, Lace Top

The weekend’s finally here! Celebrate your doll’s hard work with a cute look complete with the right amount of color. Not only does the green in the sweatshirt pick up the green in the skirt, it also allows for plenty of accessorizing opportunities.

SaturdaySaturday / Boots, Jeggings, Lace Top, Sweatshirt

Your doll can enjoy her day off in this comfy cute outfit! The boots and sweatshirt will keep her cozy, but the peeking lace top and the headband – working double time as a scarf – keep things elegant.

Have an awesome week!

Lulu and Cece

Doll Mag Academy / School Hairstyles

School Hairstyles for the Bitty TwinsWe don’t feature our pair of Bitty Twins, Lucy and Bridget, as often as we should, but with our two-week long Doll Mag Academy feature, it felt like the ideal time to give them a post all to their own! With their layered, shoulder length hair, the twins’ hairstyles rarely go beyond your basic pigtail or ponytail. However, when they are dressed in such adorable back-to-school outfits, it didn’t seem right for them not to have a cute hairstyle to match. These ‘dos are easy to pick up and are oh-so fun to customize. Master them now, and your darling toddler will be smiling big come picture day! :)

Lucy Hairstyle Step by StepTo make Lucy’s fun take on braids, follow these simple steps…

  1. Brush out your doll’s hair completely.
  2. Part the hair in the back, and secure one side with an elastic.
  3. On the other side, pull back the top section of hair and use an elastic to make a small ponytail.
  4. Add another small section of hair to the mini ponytail, and secure with an elastic.
  5. Add the remaining pieces of hair, and tie off with yet another elastic.
  6. Repeat on the other side.

Bridget Hairstyle Step by StepBridget’s cute ponytail is just as simple! Here’s the four step how-to.

  1. Brush out your doll’s hair completely.
  2. Part hair. On one side, twist the front pieces of hair into a pigtail; secure with an elastic. Repeat on the other side.
  3. Brush together the two pigtails, and use an elastic to make one ponytail.
  4. Add a coordinating bow!

Of course, these instructions can be used on bigger dolls as well. Wouldn’t these styles be perfect for short hair dolls?!

Thanks for sticking with us during Doll Mag Academy! We are having a blast so far, and Lulu and I hope you are too.

Have an amazing night!

Curling Your Doll’s Hair / Style

Cupid the StylistWhen I first got my adorable doll Rubye, I was quite worried about how much styling gunk was in her hair and after brushing all of it out, her hair was left a bit frizzy and unmanageable. I spent some time experimenting with it before finally deciding on leaving it in thick ringlets, and thought this easy and quick tutorial would help out anyone who wanted to do the same. With a little help from Cupid and Rubye, the process was easy and took less than thirty minutes, so let’s get started right away…

Rubye with Uncurled HairHere’s Rubye’s hair when her curls have been brushed out of their curls for a day. Changing this into curls isn’t very hard at all though, all you need are small hair clips (bobby pins work fine too!), a glass of warm water, a doll brush, and of course, your doll. We also recommend doing this on a towel or wash cloth, just so you don’t get your floor or rug wet. For this post, I borrowed Bella’s lovely floral beach towel from J.Crew-yay for fun patterns!

Step 1Step 1 / Brush through your doll’s hair. Make sure you get rid of any major tangles, but it’s okay if it’s not runway ready. Separate a tiny piece of your doll’s hair. For Rubye, I like to start off with her little red pieces of hair, just because I curl them a bit tighter than I do with the rest of her hair so they can frame her face.

Step 2Step 2 / Dunk this piece of hair in your cup of warm water. Get the whole piece wet, and then dry off the ends with your towel so they aren’t dripping.

Step 3Step 3 / Brush the clump of hair until it’s smooth, (this should be easier with the water) and begin twisting it. Keep twisting the hair until it curls itself into a small coil, and then secure it with a clip.

Step 4Step 4 / Continue doing this until your doll’s entire head is twisted into coils. Keep them up for about ten minutes (if you’re impatient like me), or you can wait until they’re fully dry. As long as you don’t do any intense playing or photo shoots in the first half hour of having the curls down, you should be fine either way.

Rubye with CurlsStep 5 / Once they’re dry, style the curls with your fingers.

Do you have any doll hair curling tips?

and Rubye and Cupid :)
