Craft / Floral Headband

Hello!

Make a Floral HeadbandOne of my favorite accessories? A headband! Here in the Doll Mag household, we keep overflowing stashes of Vera Bradley and stretch headbands in our bathroom drawer, ready to be thrown on whenever we’re in need of a easy – and cute – hairstyle. It comes as no surprise then that one of my favorite sewing projects for dolls is (you guessed it!) a headband – I can whip one up in under an hour and add designs depending on the season or outfit. Yesterday afternoon I took some photos of my latest project; a headband for my Hearts for Hearts doll Lauryce, decorated with spring-y florals. I was quite pleased with the results, and hope you are too! If you choose to craft your own, the instructions below have headband measurements for both AG and H4H dolls.

Supplies for HeadbandYOU WILL NEED…

  • Fabric
  • 1/8 inch thick elastic cord (you can easily use something a bit thicker if that’s what you have on hand!)
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Fabric scissors/scissors
  • Needle & thread or a sewing machine
  • Pencil (not pictured)

Step by Step HeadbandTO MAKE

  1. Cut a piece of fabric into a rectangle using the fabric scissors. If you’re making this for a Hearts for Hearts doll, you’ll want it to be 2×8 inches large, while American Girls need a 3×9 inch piece of fabric.
  2. Hem the edges of the fabric using the sewing machine/needle and thread. I used a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
  3. Paint your floral design onto the fabric! Feel free to get creative – we dipped the eraser of a pencil in paint to make the petals of our flowers and added details with the brush. (Be sure to keep your work area clean by pouring the paints onto a paper plate and having a piece of cardboard or plain paper underneath your fabric as you work.)
  4. While you’re waiting for your painted floral masterpiece to completely dry, cut a piece of elastic cord 3 inches long.
  5. Fold the short edges of the fabric around the elastic cord and sew them together. We recommend sticking to the  hand sewn (needle and thread) method for this step, as the thickness of the elastic and fabric together can cause trouble for your sewing machine’s needle.
  6. All done!

Meet Beatrice!

Hi!

Meet Beatrice 1

I hope you’re all having a lovely start to your week! Although I’m feeling a bit under the weather, (colds are no fun!) I couldn’t wait to share the newest addition to our doll family. Over the weekend, I received the EAH Forest Pixie Harelow doll as a gift, and fell in love with her adorable bunny ears and spring-y dress. I ended up renaming her Beatrice (after Peter Rabbit author Beatrix Potter) and decided that she’s a fan of animals, illustration, riding her bike, and gardening. Yesterday afternoon the two of us headed outside for a sunlight-filled photo shoot..

A Review of Josefina’s Nightgown

Hi!

Josefina 1Ever since I first learned about her, Josefina has been my favorite AG historical doll. I remember saving up my money to buy her online, snatching up her outfits, and picking up her mystery book multiple times at my local library. Due to her special place in my heart, I always keep an eye out during new releases to see if she gets any new outfits, so I was thrilled a few months ago with the Beforever pajama revamp. At our last visit to the American Girl Store, I picked up Josefina’s orange and white nightgown, falling in love with its orange accents and matching slippers. This weekend I finally got a chance to write up my thoughts on this lovely set, which you can check out below!

NightgownHemlineThe dress is a shift style, with layering and orange stitching at the bottom adding some pretty embellishment. In some positions, it can look a little rectangle-like, although I’m sure a good ironing out of the folds left from being in the box will help with that. The white and orange look lovely on Josefina, and make it a welcome addition to her collection!

NecklineOne of my favorite parts on the nightgown is the neckline, which is a square shape, covered with a layer of lace fabric and topped off with a woven orange ribbon. The shape is flattering on Josefina, and the crochet lace is a nice touch. I adore the woven detail of the ribbon, which adds some color to the dress. The bow on mine was a bit crooked at first, but I was able to straighten it out pretty well by the time of the photos.

ShoesAlong with the nightgown is a pair of cream-colored slippers, with an embroidered flower and an orange scalloped pattern around the edge. They’re pretty easy to get on, and stayed on Josefina’s feet throughout the photo shoot and an afternoon of being moved around. I love the pops of pink and blue that the flower brings to the outfit, and the embroidery around the edge is quite nice. The soles and overall shape are simple, but I’m a fan of the fact that they allow Josefina to stand on her own!

Josefina 2We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Hello!

We hope you’re all having a lovely Sunday! With the start of our February break tomorrow, Bella and I are looking forward to afternoons spent watching Scandal, hanging out with friends, and writing up a few blog posts (keep your eye out for a review of Josefina’s nightgown later this week!) And what better way to kick off our break than with Valentine’s Day? The cold New England weather left behind some snow, making it the perfect backdrop for a photo shoot featuring our own EAH cutie, Cupid.

Reviews for the Wintertime

Hello!

How are you all? Lulu and I are keeping our eyes on the forecast for the weekend, as we’re anxious for a snowfall! In the meantime, however, we thought we’d pop in with a set of product reviews: one on the Warm Winter Outfit and Accessories, which Lulu was kindly gifted at Christmas {it was timely too – winter in New England certainly calls for a cute sweater and hat!} and another on the new Diabetes Set, which I snagged on the day of Lea’s release at the AG store. Both have their pros and cons, as you’ll see in our thoughts below. If you have either set, what do you think of them?

Lulu will take it away first! :)

IMG_0589My least favorite part about the Warm Winter outfit would have to be the leggings. While a great color, they fit awkwardly in the top half of the leg and don’t work very well as bottoms with the short sweater. They should come in handy however, when mixing and matching in the future!

IMG_0600The orange and dark purple color palette can be hard to pull off, but when done right, it can be one of my favorite combinations. In this case, I’m a fan! The material is soft and cozy, and I love the cut of the neckline. The heart elbow patches are cute, as well! Louisa in the SnowI am a huge fan of fluffy winter hats, so you can imagine my excitement when I first saw this adorable accessory! The fair aisle pattern is detailed, but not too busy, and adds a bit of fun to the outfit. And the pom-pom on top and fleece lining? Yes, please!

Louisa in the SnowAG usually does a pretty good job with their winter boots, and this time was no different! Using the same fabric as the hat, the orange cording and purple accents pull out the main color elements of the outfit. They’re quite easy to get on, and make it simple for your doll to stand – looking stylish while doing so, of course.

Doll mittens and gloves can be a bit tricky – full fingered gloves are too hard to slip onto AG hands, and if mittens are too loose, they are prone to fall off. The solution in this case? Fingerless gloves! Admittedly, these took me way longer to put to put on than they probably should have, and they’re not the most practical things in the world, but they sure are cute and help tie the outfit together.

Louisa in the SnowFinally we have the vest, which is made of a dark quilted fabric lined with fleece. It fits easily over the sweater, and while movement is a bit restricted when the Velcro is fully attached, it looks nice open or closed. It’s a great extra layer for winter days!

Overall? Some elements in the Warm Winter Outfit could use tweaking, but the majority of it is made up of cute and comfortable pieces in one of my favorite colors. I would recommend it for its accessories {especially the hat and the boots} and altogether winter-y look.

American Girl Diabetes KitMy turn! As I had mentioned in my initial thoughts, I couldn’t be happier that American Girl had finally released a kit for their diabetic fans. Though the colors and materials veer to unrealistic, the accuracy of said pieces are top-notch. In other words? I could do without the blatant plastic look of the accessories, but I give my wholehearted approval to the intention behind each part, whether it’s the adorable miniature meter or the canister of glucose tablets.

American Girl Diabetes Kit and BagEverything fits neatly into the included bag – any diabetic will tell you that there’s a lot to carry around! I like the opportunity AG provides to personalize the kit; it’s a nice touch, and I personally think it only adds to the set’s appeal.

American Girl Diabetes Log and Meter

Buy it for yourself: Diabetes Care Kit

One drawback to the set? The lack of test strips! It’s a shame they didn’t include them because all other pieces clearly had so much thought put into them. Case in point: the journal, which has ample space for any doll diabetic to log and track her blood sugars throughout the day.

Overall, though, I’m pleased with the set. The play and educational purpose it serves greatly outweighs its cost {and at $24, it leans towards the cheaper end of the AG line}. American Girl has taken great measures to diversify their medical line, and in doing so, I believe they truly live up to the message of their brand. Thumbs up from me!

Have a terrific afternoon!

The Doll Mag Book Club / Winter 2016

Hello!

Doll Mag Winter Book ClubHappy Sunday! Are you enjoying the long weekend? Going out with friends? Catching up on your favorite television show? Or, perhaps, reading a good book? We’re right there with you – Lulu and I love to read, and we frequently take the time before bed or on free afternoons to dive into our library books.

Avid readers that we are, we launched the DM Book Club last summer; throughout July and August {and a bit of September as well}, we read one of our favorite classics, Anne of Green Gables, and discussed it weekly with you all! The two of us had such a good time that we are planning yet another round for the winter months. This time, we’ve chosen Ally Carter’s YA classic, I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have to Kill You, the first story in the Gallagher Girl series.

Lulu and I both read and adored this entire set of books, and we hope you will as well! {Fair warning: we tried to choose a novel that most Doll Mag readers would enjoy; Common Sense Media recommends it for ages 11-12 and up}. Our summer book club was an excellent learning experience, and we think this round will go even better than before.

If you’re interested in joining us, set your calendar for the dates below:

  • January 31: Chapters One through Seven
  • February 15: Chapters Eight through Fourteen
  • February 28: Chapters Fifteen through Twenty-One
  • March 13: Chapters Twenty-Two through Twenty-Eight

Have a lovely afternoon!
Bella

AG January Release 2016 / Bella’s Thoughts

Hello!

If there’s one thing Lulu and I have learned, it’s that time truly does fly when you’re having fun. While our Doll Mag posts have been less than frequent over the last few months {we’ve taken to the slow blogging approach}, we were able to spend much time with our family during the holidays. Now, two weeks into the new year, and we’re slowly adjusting back into our school schedule after our relaxing winter break.

That saying holds true in another sense as well: Lulu and I were laughing when we went up to the American Girl store on the day of Lea’s release because we felt as if Jess, the 2006 Girl of the Year, had just been in stores! Ten years might have passed, but the two of us still look forward to the GOTY’s release with excitement come December, and it was no different of a case with Lea’s collection. Discussing the new items with YOU all has evolved into a tradition of its own, so I’m here today with 2016’s take! What items caught your eye from the new release?
American Girl January 2016[1] Lea Clark Doll Lea is such a cutie! I’ll admit, I’m disappointed by the lack of diversity in the GOTY line {that’s a discussion for another day}, but for what she is, I think Lea is a unique addition to American Girl’s doll offerings. Though she doesn’t have a home in my collection, it’s easy for me to see the appeal of her long hair and her colorful dress.

[2] Lea’s Three-Toed Sloth Something I do see myself buying one day? Lea’s animals, such as the adorable three-toed sloth! I’m not surprised it’s been so popular of an item – it’s hard not to smile when looking at this little guy. Two thumbs up from me!

[3] Diabetes Care Kit I was overjoyed to see this set appear on the new items page – I feel it’s been long overdue! I was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes several years ago, so I can testify to the pieces’ accuracy and detail, right down to the tiny glucose tablets. It is priced reasonably, comes with a number of things, and, most importantly, will mean the world to young diabetics.

[4] Lea’s Fruit Stand Lea’s “big-ticket” item is her Rainforest House, but if you’re not willing to spend four hundred dollars {I’m right there with you!}, Lea’s Fruit Stand seems to be just as well-made and have just as much play value. I particularly love how bright the set is, from the pink inside walls to the fresh produce, but then again, anything with mini doll food is on my wishlist :)

[5] Lea’s Bahia Outfit Lulu and I just saw our first snowfall of the season, but my first glance at Lea’s Bahia Outfit had me thinking of summer! I like that each piece can stand on its own {the top would pair well with jeans or capris, the shorts are a basic that can go with anything and everything, and those sandals seem like a summer essential}, but, together, they create an adorable ensemble.

[6] Lea’s Rainforest Dreams Pajamas I was first deterred by the bright color palette of Lea’s pajamas, but they won me over once I saw them in person. I adore the tropical print, and I’d imagine my doll, Zoey, would rock them well. Even better? So long as it’s styled correctly, I think this romper can function as an everyday piece too!

[7] No Ordinary Sound: Melody’s First Book Finally, my interest in Lea was eclipsed by my love of the new Beforever character, Melody! She won’t make her debut until July, but if she looks anything like her illustration, I think she’ll be all sorts of cute. I haven’t had the chance to look at her book yet, but I hope to do so soon – I’m intrigued to see how the author weaves her story into the time period.

If you want to browse the new items yourself, click HERE :)

Have a wonderful rest of your day!
Bella

Psst. One last DM announcement, while we have your attention: there will be no January/February issue. Instead, we hope you’ll check back for the next edition of Doll Mag on March 1st!

Bri’s (Second!) New Year’s Eve Live Blog

Greetings!

Bri Live Blog 2015

That’s right, my lovely readers! I, your faithful blogger Bri, have returned. I apologize for not posting these past couple months, (I’ve deemed it “The Bri-less Age”) but I have been busy planning this year’s live blog extravaganza. For those of you who may have missed it-

Hi everyone! I’m really excited for…oh. You’re already doing the intro.

Oh, hello Lulu! I miss our funny intro banter, don’t you?

Yes! Good times.

Yeah…

Well, have you told our readers about tonight’s event?

I was just getting to that. You can read the details below!

  • Right now, I’m having a New Year’s Eve extravaganza with my friends, and will be blogging an extra special post in honor of the event here on the Doll Mag blog. The post will be updated throughout the evening at every half hour. So, every 30 minutes, be sure to refresh your page to see what I’m up to.
  • The event starts right now at 8:30 PM E.T. and will run until 12:00 AM.
  • Starting 8:30 PM E.T. till 12:00 AM E.T., I will be online and responding to your comments!

Let’s get to the celebrating!

Bri 1

(8:30) Now, as you might remember, I don’t always have, let us say, the best luck when it comes to New Year’s Eve — after all, last year I forgot it was even happening!

Anyhooo, I’m determined to make sure things go perfectly tonight.

Bri 2

Oh, and Rosalind and Piper are here too! (They helped me set up.)

“Hey guys,” I beckon them over, waving at the camera, “say hello!”

Piper bites her lip, slightly confused. “Um, who are we saying hello to?”

I laugh, “The readers of course! Lulu is going to help me do another live blog.”

Bri 3

Speaking of the live blog, I have all sorts of things planned for the rest of the evening. Video games (I’m a master at Just Dance,) movies (Enchanted!), the menu (hot cocoa, cookies, and lots of popcorn), and-oh! People are starting to arrive. Be back in a bit!

Bri 4

(9:00) “Hi everyone! I’m so glad you could all make it. Okay, let’s see…there’s snacks in the kitchen courtesy of Piper, Cupid, and Molly, and I have the movie set up in the other room, and if  anyone wants to play Just Dance, we can move the chairs out of the way in here.”

I survey the room, wanting to make sure there’s enough space. A few of the girls shuffle off into different directions, making my cozy living room a bit less crowded.

Bri 5

“Thanks for inviting us!” Molly exclaims after we’re done shifting our seating arrangements.

I smile at this. “I’m so happy you all could come! Now, onto business. Who dares to challenge me in an exciting game of copying onscreen movement?!”

(Silence.)

“Um, I mean, who wants to play Just Dance?” With a laugh, a couple of my friends raise their hands.

Bri 6

With some teamwork, we manage to clear away the furniture and set up the TV, with Sienna picking the first song. As you can clearly tell, I am quite the accomplished dancer. (Lulu’s Note: Those are definitely not the moves on the screen.)

I shall return soon with the results of our game!!

Bri 7

(9:30) “So how’d Just Dance go?” Piper asks as we walk down the hall.

“Uh, fine,” I answer, biting my lip.

She laughs, “You lost, didn’t you?”

“Yes,” I mumble with a pout.

Piper smiles. “I’m going to go grab a snack. Why don’t you go see what Kitty and Rubye are up to?”

I wave goodbye and head over to the couch, where the Wonderlandian best friends have been hanging out with our new friend, Sarah, all evening. “Hey guys! What are you doing?”

Bri 8

“Reading.” Ruby answers with a nod, not taking her eyes off the page of her book. Kitty shrugs and I turn to Sarah, tilting my head curiously.

“They’ve been at it for hours,” She laughs. I nod. Rubye LOVES to read.

Bri 10

(10:00) “Hey!” I say cheerfully, entering the room where a movie is playing. Seeing that the film is at a dramatic moment, I drop my voice to a whisper. “Sorry. Hi.”

Rosalind smiles from over by the chair, inviting me to sit down. “You’re just in time for the end!”

Bri 11

I smile back and take a seat next to Cupid, who offers me a pillow. I settle myself in and turn my attention to the screen, which is blaring out dramatic music, until-

Bri 12

ALL THE LIGHTS GO OUT. It’s a power outage!

Oh snap.

Bri 13

(10:30) Hello there! Sorry if I left you in a bit of suspense earlier. Luckily, the power outage was nothing to worry about — Piper and Gigi had our back up generator ready in no time!

Still, in the spirit of things, we have decided to break out our flashlights and some of our favorite board games for a BOARD GAME EXTRAVAGANZA EXTRAORDINARE–

Bri 14

“Bri,” Eliza interrupts, stumbling in. “Where do you want the board games?”

I look around, searching for a proper spot. “Here’s fine.” She nods and sets them down. “Wait, is that Scrabble?” I ask excitedly, peering at the pile of games. Eliza nods, and I hop up and poke my head into the hallway. “Anyone want to play Scrabble with me?”

“I will!” Rosalind calls back.

Bri 15

“How fun!” I exclaim, sitting back down and turning to the camera. “Sister vs. Sister! A battle of wits! The Scrabble Games! That’s right folks – come back in a half hour for the first event in our BOARD GAME EXTRAVAGANZA!”

Bri 16

(11:00) “Sorry Bri, your own name doesn’t count as a Scrabble word. You can do “rib” though,” Grace shrugs.

Rosalind and I are deep into our game, and I’m running out of words! It’s quite fun though, with Sienna and Dani giving sports-style commentary and Grace acting as our scorekeeper.

Bri 17

“Yes, this is a great match everyone,” Sienna announces as she and Dani watch the game. “Bri is only a few points behind Rosalind, who snagged the lead with “waterfall” earlier this evening. With only a couple of tiles left, the game is tight and OH! It’s time to tally up our winner!”

Bri 18

Grace quickly does a few calculations on her piece of paper and runs over to Dani, whispering the results in her ear. Dani gasps, her eyes widening.

“It’s a TIE!”

Rosalind and I share a glance before letting out a series of laughs, congratulating each other on our shared victory.

Bri 20

(11:30) Piper and I are chatting, and she soon realizes, “There’s only another thirty minutes until midnight.”

At this point in the evening, I’m feeling a bit snack-y, so a thought pops into my head. “That means there’s only another thirty minutes to have popcorn in 2015! Care for something to eat?”

She agrees and together we run off to grab some refreshments.

Bri 22

(12:00) “Bri! Come on, it’s time to go watch the ball drop on TV!” Grace calls from the living room. I rush in and take a seat on the couch, where we all take a moment to snap a quick picture before turning our attention to the television, beginning our annual countdown to 2016 (which I hope is a fabulous year for all of you lovely readers!)

“Five…four…three…two…”

Bri 21

“WE FINISHED OUR BOOKS!” Rubye exclaims as we all laugh. I lean over to give my friends a high five. “I’m impressed! You even got to the epilogue?” Rubye’s eyes widen. “There’s. An. Epilogue?”

Happy New Year everyone!

Lots of love,

The Doll Mag Team

Bri’s New Year’s Live Blog + Meet Eliza and Sarah

Happy Almost January, everyone! Bella and I wanted to spend the last couple days of 2015 getting a head start on our New Year’s Resolutions – being a bit better about updating the blog. We’ve been really busy these past couple of months with school and the holidays, but not to worry! We have lots of great things coming up, including our next issue, featuring the new GOTY. (Bella and I are going to our nearest AG store on Friday for the new release, and we’ll be sure to share our thoughts on the new items.) Today I’m popping in to share some fun Bri-related news, as well as introduce you to two new additions who joined our doll family last week.

Bri Live Blog 2015First up, Bri will be back this year with another New Year’s Eve Live Blog! For those of you who missed last year’s event, you can check it out here (along with the summer version), but we can also quickly sum it up: Bri and her buds celebrated the New Year with a party (and took over the comments section), which was documented and updated every half hour here on the blog until midnight. The response was great and we had loads of fun, so Bella and I are quite excited for this year’s installment. Check out the details below!

  • On December 31 (Tomorrow!) Bri will be having a New Year’s Eve extravaganza with her friends, and will be blogging an extra special post in honor of the event here on the Doll Mag blog. The post will be updated throughout the evening at every half hour. So, every 30 minutes, be sure to refresh your page to see what Bri is up to.
  • The event starts tomorrow evening at 8:30 PM E.T. and will run until 12:00 AM.
  • Starting 8:30 PM E.T. till 12:00 AM E.T., Bri will be online and responding to your comments! Sounds fun, right?

We hope you can join in on the festivities! And of course, you can always catch up on Jan 1st.

Now, onto the new additions to our doll family! I was lucky enough to receive two new Ever After High dolls this holiday season, Dragon Games Darling Charming and Fairest on Ice Duchess Swan. Both are gorgeous and very photogenic, so I couldn’t wait to do their introductory photo shoots. Below are their pictures and a bit more in-depth info about them.

Eliza 1I’ll start with Duchess, who is a vision in purple. When I first saw the photos of the Fairest on Ice line, Duchess was definitely my favorite, but seeing her in person is what really made me fall in love with her. She has the loveliest eyes and makeup (those eyebrows!) and her outfit is gorgeous. I ended up renaming her Eliza, because not only does it suit her, but also because Bella and I are huge Hamilton fans, and Eliza Hamilton (played by the amazing Phillipa Soo) is the best. Anyway, I figure that Eliza probably enjoys ice skating, Broadway musicals, a good brunch, and dance.

Eliza 2 Eliza 3 Eliza 4

Sarah 1Next up we have Dragon Games Darling Charming, who I’ve been eyeing for a little while. I really liked Darling’s character in the EAH webseries, so I was eager to check out her dolls. Her Dragon Games version immediately piqued my interest with her detailed armor and light blue color palette, so I was quite excited to receive her as a gift. And like Eliza, she is amazing in person! She has a really nice facial screening, and her outfit is super duper cool. I ended up naming her Sarah, (after Sarah Walker, from my favorite TV show, Chuck) and decided that she probably likes fantasy movies and books (Wizards! Pirates! Magic!), mythology and mythos, animals, and chocolate chip cookies.

Sarah 2 Sarah 3 Sarah 4 (With my Land of Nod plush, Athena the Unicorn)

And one last photo of these cuties together…

Sarah 5 Happy Wednesday!

Lulu
